Since 1979, in preparation for my master thesis, I have been doing fieldwork in various local communities in Northern Norway: Rødøy, Andøy, Tysfjord, Hattfjelldal, Markebygdene i Skånland og Evenes, Bjerkvik, Vassdalen, Gratangen. Over the years my main interest have been the multi-cultural situation in Northern-Norway and Sabmi - the Sami Core Areas in Northern Scandinavia and Russia. Areas of research: Socialization, traditional and modern knowledge systems, documentation- and learning systems, politics of recognition, field-work methodology.

Current Research

Documentation- and Learning Centres in a Socio-Cultural Perspective.

The increasing tension between traditional- and modern knowledge systems have led to an awearness in indigenous communities in Northern Norway for the presentation, maintainance and development of local knowledge systems. For this purpose, many Sami communities have initiated, and in some instances build what often is named Cultural Centres. These are multi-purpose centers containing museums, libraries, archieves, documentation materials, educational departments. Multi-media technologies, educational purposes (language, distant educational courses, cultural education etc).

I am currently developing an action-orientet researchproject where the learning- and socialization aspect of these ceters are put in focus.
