Logic and Natural language (LNS)
Welcome to the research group for Logic and Natural Language at the Department of Informatics, University of Oslo.
We are interested in logic in all its aspects, from theoretical mathematical logic and proof theory to applications in computer science, artificial intelligence and linguistics. And we are interested in the processing of natural languages by computers, also called computational linguistics. Our interests in this field span from fundamental studies with basis in logic to applications like machine translation. You will get more of an impression if you read our research pages.
Both logic and computational linguistics are interdisciplinary fields. Logic has been of interest to philosophers and mathematicians long before the computer age; while computational linguistics combine insights from linguistics, logic and computer science. The group has the primary responsibility for the bachelor and masters programs in IT language, logic, psychology, where we collaborate with several other departments, in particular the psychologists.
Our research
We are interested in logic in all its aspects, from theoretical mathematical logic and proof theory to applications in computer science, artificial intelligence and linguistics. We are currently in particular working on proof theory and in the application of logic in formal language theory.
Within computational linguistics and natural language processing our basic approach is based on so-called deep analysis. We try to use logic and linguistics to build models of the language which can be used for processing. We have a long tradition in using unification-based grammars, and are currently using type-based grammars and the LKB-platform. We have lately started to combine deep linguistic methods with stochastic methods based on machine leaning.
