Norwegian researchers have developed a fish pot that may become of great use to fishermen in Mauritius. The pot is environmentally friendly and easy-to-use, and is well suited to the highly productive temperate waters around the island nation, as well as to tropical seas in general.

The cage environment is the key to salmon production

Researchers are proposing four possible measures to improve the lives of farmed salmon and simultaneously increase production. By releasing feed below the surface and using underwater lights, you can lure the fish away from the sea lice larvae on the surface, and greater monitoring will make it possible to optimise the environment. If simple procedures are also developed to spot abnormal behaviour, fish farmers will be able to discover signs of disease at an earlier stage.

The sustainability of the Norwegian aquaculture industry between Rogaland and Troms is being challenged by infection pressure of sea lice on wild salmonids and the possible genetic impact of escaped salmon. However, it is low likelihood of eutrofication and organic overload on a regional scale.

Two scientists are already on their way south to prepare vessel and equipment for the first survey in February.

The Institute of Marine Research is constantly monitoring, and collecting large amounts of data from, all of the Norwegian territorial waters. We have created a new database – SJØMIL – to make it easier to access some of the data. There you can find time series for temperature, salinity and fishery resources, as well as time series for the status of fisheries from the International Council for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES).

By then the genome is fully sequenced and partially analyzed, making it possible to utilise it in the work towards developing vaccines and new medications against salmon lice. As the salmon louse has developed resistance against most chemicals used for delousing at fish farms, this is an important step towards developing alternative approaches.
