Master of Science in Industrial Ecology

Industrial Ecology is a relatively new approach towards studying and solving environmental problems. It focuses on understanding how resources are used and emissions produced in society, applying the metaphor of ecology to industrial systems. Based on an understanding of the connection between nature, production systems and consumption, it develops strategies and tools to reduce emissions and resource use. Industrial Ecology is relevant to both industrialized and rapidly industrializing countries.

“Industrial ecology is the study of the flows of materials and energy in industrial and consumer activities, of the effect of these flows on the environment, and of the influence of economic, political, regulatory and social factors on the flow, use and transformation of resources. The objective of industrial ecology is to understand better how we can integrate environmental concerns into our economic activities. This integration, an ongoing process, is necessary if we are to address current and future environmental concerns.”

(Robert White, US Academy of Engineering).

With its study program in Industrial Ecology, NTNU has had a degree-granting programme in Industrial Ecology since 1999. NTNU is well recognized internationally as a leader in teaching this subject. The new Master's programme builds on the experience with the study programme, but it strengthens the teaching in core methods and applications. The teaching is adapted to the different professional needs of individuals working in the areas of manufacturing, technical development, consulting, policy analysis, and corporate management through two different programme specializations. In addition to the Master's programme, NTNU's Industrial Ecology programme (IndEcol) also offers courses in Industrial Ecology to students enrolled in other, disciplinary degree programmes at NTNU. Moreover, it offers a PhD in Industrial Ecology.

The Master’s programme is aimed at both Norwegian and international students. The programme consists of two years of full-time studies, giving a total of 120 ECTS credits. The teaching language is English.

Learning outcomes

The Master’s programme aims to provide candidates with interdisciplinary, theoretical and methodological skills to apply Industrial Ecology on different scales (society, sector, company, products/services) to increase environmental and economic performance and improve sustainability.

Specializations
Students at NTNU's MSc in Industrial Ecology specialize in one of two areas:
:: Environmental Systems Analysis
:: Environmental Politics and Management

Marte Klavenes, Anders Hermansen and Camilla Kokkersvold were students of the first class we recruited in 1999, and they found the programme to be interesting.
