Abstract

We will be running a two stage interactive event based on our knowledge building participatory simulations using handheld and wearable computers. In the first stage, CSCL participants will be given wearable computers (MIT “Badges”) or use Palm computers to interact with each other throughout the conference as they participate in a knowledge building activity that combines participatory simulation with discourse. In the second stage we will gather participants to debrief the first stage of the activity, and facilitate an additional participatory simulation. Our potential activities include those on genetics, bioengineering, market formation, and the evolution of cooperation. In our discussion we will focus on the design features of the two platforms that lend themselves to these applications, and demonstrate a prototype of a combined Palm/Badge interface that might bring the best features of these platforms together.
