- Specialization in Networks and Quality of Service
This field of specialization has focus on architecture issues and the application of the performance and dependability discipline in modern digital communication networks. The communication network functionality comprises both functionality for the transport of information, control and supervision of traffic flows in the networks, and mobility handling. The appropriate network architecture depends on the types of information transferred and the user demands for QoS (Quality of Service). What are the consequences of using a single IP-based packet network for the integrated transport of all types of information (speech, music, video, text and picture)? How does GSM and UMTS work? What will the next generation Internet be like? How do we construct dependable fully optical communication networks with extreme data communication rates in the Gigabit/sec region? How can we provide networks and servers with a sufficient traffic handling capability so that long response times caused by overloaded systems are avoided? Why can Internet response be slow even though you have ADSL access?
