PROJECT OUTLINE

Project Description

Until recently, huge oil and gas resources have been
accessible in shallow water and it has been possible to
exploit them using fixed drilling and production units. In
the North Sea, as in several other areas, new resources
have been found in smaller and less available fields
further out at sea in hostile environments.

The stringent requirements as to vessel performance,
environmental aspects and overall safety have resulted in
an increased focus on the total vessel concept and the
interactions between the various types of equipment and
systems installed. Flexibility in operation has enabled
electrical power generation and distribution systems for
propulsion, positioning, oil production, drilling, and
loading, where all equipment and control systems are
integrated into a common power plant and automation
network. The use of floating concepts for deep sea
drilling, floating production and shuttle tankers have
become possible with dynamic positioning or thruster
assisted position mooring.

Typical for these vessels is the large installed thruster
power, often in the range of 12-40 MW. Together with
production, drilling utilities and hotel loads, the
installed power may typically be in the range of 25-50
MW. There is a potential for substantial cost savings and
energy optimization for such vessels by applying new
solutions based on so-called in-between technology in the
fields of control, electrical power and marine technology
integrated with the conceptual design of vessel hull,
thruster system, mooring system, etc.

The five main objectives for the MARINTRONICS project are:

1. Energy and Vessel Mission Optimization: To develop
functional integration of the systems for positioning,
automation, drives and energy distribution and
generation in order to optimize the vessel mission (i.e.
drilling, oil production, transit, etc.), performance
(i.e. positioning accuracy, roll and pitch motion, etc.)
and energy consumption. This will benefit the
environment by reduced fuel consumption with
corresponding NOx/COx emissions and the ship/rig
operator by reduced operational expenses and higher
system availability and reliability.

2. Increased Operational Safety: To further develop
functional integration and adding new functionality to
the ABB sub-systems in order to increase performance,
operational stability and safety. This will benefit the
customers by more reliable operations and reduced
operational expenses.

3. Develop Competence and Establish Partnerships: To
increase the level of competence in the fields of
control/automation and electrical power technologies
applied in the marine, oil and gas market in order to
establish NORWAY and ABB as the scientific leader in
this field. Transfer technology between the partners to
establish long term partnership and loyalty between ABB
and its customers.

4. Optimal MARINTRONICS Design: To achieve optimal design
of the floating marine, oil and gas concepts with
quipment and systems according to customer requirements
by total system design and validation (Just According to
Function Specification 'JAFS').

5. Coordinated Sales Activities (internal ABB activity): To
achieve persuasive, efficient and coordinated sales
activities of ABB packages within and between the ABB
business areas IAD and IOP.

Keywords: energy optimization, operational safety, offshore
vessels.

Technological Development Envisaged

The goal for energy and vessel mission optimization is to
reduce energy consumption by 15-25% with respect to state-
of-the-art solutions for shuttle tankers, FPSOs and
drilling vessels (assuming fuel costs NOK 464/MWh, this
will result in cost savings in the range of of 5-20 million
NOK each year depending on operational profile).

The results from the project to achieve these goals will be:
* Local torque and power control of consumers of energy,
such as thrusters, pumps, etc.
* An Energy Management System (EMS) based on intelligent
power allocation, distribution and load predictions from
consumers such as positioning systems, etc.
* Thruster/positioning system integration to improve
overall performance and reduce fuel consumption by
developing optimal ABB thruster/positioning solutions for
transit and station keeping.
* Generator control (combined cycles) to achieve generator
allocation/sharing in integration with the EMS.

The goals for increased operational safety are:

(1) To reduce the probability of shutdowns and electrical
blackout by 50-75% with respect to conventional
solutions.
(2) To have an operational support system in a user-
friendly man-machine interface that reduces the number
of human-based errors by 50% by utilizing information
from different ABB sub-systems.

The results from the project to achieve these goals will be:
* A new generation of advanced EMS (replacing the power
management system) which is fully integrated with vessel
power, automation, positioning, and process plant
control.
* Automatic operation dependent generator-on/off control
mode.
* Data acquisition, statistics, reporting and alarm system
to support operator decisions.
* Common electronic documentation (with links between the
various systems) to ensure correct operations.

The goal for developing competence and establish
partnerships is to strengthen the competence in ABB and
NORWAY in the fields of control engineering, electrical
power and naval architecture.

The results from the project to achieve this goal will be:
* To educate 6 Ph.Ds (Dr.Ing.); 1 within mooring analysis
and propulsion systems (Division of Marine
Hydrodynamics), 2 within electrical power analysis and
stability (Division of Electrical Power Systems), and 3
in guidance and control (Division of Engineering
Cybernetics).
* To define topics and assist in supervision of 30 M.Sc.
(Siv. ing.) in the preparation of their main theses.

The goal for optimal MARINTRONICS design is to reduce
capex (capital expenses - equipment and engineering) of the
total ABB solution by 10-30% with respect to a competing
solution, and still meet functional specifications and
performance requirements.

The results from the project to achieve these goals will be:
* Optimal power and automation system design and
configuration avoiding unnecessary over-dimensioning.
* Total simulator set-up of the most important components
of consumers and producers of energy in an integrated
solution demonstrating functionality, performance and
robustness of sub-systems and overall automation system
and power plant network (for design and testing).
* Definition of common model formats and interfaces between
the various sub-systems.
* Formulation of overall design specification for floating
concepts for drilling and oil production including hull
and mooring design and installed equipment considering a
total life cycle cost evaluation from sales, engineering,
manufacturing, commissioning and operation processes.

Market Application and Exploitation

For ABB there are two approaches to enter the marine
offshore oil and gas market:

1. Offering stand-alone power, automation, and positioning
systems and engineering packages.
2. Offering integrated solutions of power and automation
systems in a total vessel concept.

The latter market segment is the most important with
respect to volume and increased possibility for deliveries
of other packages such as subsea equipment, wellhead
platforms, etc.

A payback analysis has been carried out for the marine
offshore oil and gas market considering only electrical
power and automation systems. Process equipment and
the engineering scope are not included.

The estimated market volume (number of order intake)
available for ABB of vessels equipped with positioning
systems is presented for the years 1998 to 2002. The volume
includes FPSO, (Multi-purpose) shuttle tanker, drill ship,
semi-submersibles and offshore service vessels.

Expertise

With its approximately 1,100 employees, the company
strengthened its posiiton in 1997 as one of the leading
suppliers to the Norwegian oil and gas market, not least as
a result of new deliveries of subsea technology to the
market. The company also achieved good results in terms of
health, safety and the environment. The bulk of this
company's business is concentrated in the Norwegian oil and
gas market, and operations include substantial engineering,
contracting, modification/maintenance and product/system
deliveries. One specialty is the supply of complete subsea
installations. ABB OFFSHORE TECHNOLOGY A/S has delivered
products and services to most oil and offshore
installations in the Norwegian North Sea. The production
hall in Dusavik outside Stavanger was expanded and
modernised in 1997. As a result, the company has
consolidated all its production facilities under one roof.
The company is headquartered in Sandnes, with large
divisions in Oslo and Bergen.
ABB has the exclusive right to market TENTECH technology
for complete Floating Production Systems. The concept is
hased on a turret and mooring solution, where the turret
makes it possible to produce oil and gas independent of sea
and wind conditions. Another technology that keeps ships
steady regardless of weather is a dynamic positioning
system developed by ABB INDUSTRI. This new system can
reduce the fuel consumption of production vessels by up to
15%. These ABB designs have proved superior and have been
the preferred licence for newbuilds by operators in the
North Sea.
ABB OFFSHORE TECHNOLOGY is responsible for ABB's subsea EPC
projects, in close cooperation with ABB VETCO GRAY and ABB
SEATEC. The company has won subsea contracts in the USA,
AUSTRALIA and BRAZIL. Based on successful deliveries to
ESSO's "Balder" project in NORWAY, ABB has signed a
worldwide subsea technology agreement with EXXON.
NORSK HYDRO awarded ABB OFFSHORE TECHNOLOGY the world's
first contract to develop and deliver a subsea separation
system, which separates water from the wellstream and
re-injects the water into the reservoir. The facility,
named "Troll Pilot", is based on ABB's SUBSIS concept and
will be installed in the Troll field in the North Sea.
Another important event for the company was the contract
awarded by STATOIL for the tie-in system for flow-lines
and associated structures on Aasgard, where ABB OFFSHORE
TECHNOLOGY launched "Icarus", its new tie-in tool. In
partnership with HEEREMA, ABB OFFSHORE TECHNOLOGY won two
important contracts in 1997. The first was for the total
delivery and installation of a 7000 ton wellhead platform
for ESSO's Jotun field, and the second contract was for the
construction of a new compression module for the Valhall
field in the North Sea.

Will provide know-how on commissioning and operation of shuttle-tankers, semi-submersibles and FPSO. Will define requirement specifications for future floating concepts for drilling, oil production and transit and provide data.

Expertise

HYDRO has more than 30,000 employees around the world. In
1997, the company had operating revenues of 96 billion NOK
and an operating income of 10.7 billion NOK. HYDRO is in a
strong growth phase and is aiming to double business volume
between 1966 and 2005, the company's 100th anniversary year.
HYDRO uses its expertise and global standing to serve
customers as a local partner. Efficient production and
distribution solutions, and employees and partners with
strong local roots, combine to give us a springboard to
further growth.
NORSK HYDRO has Europe as its home market, and the growth
in Central and South America has been primarily related to
agriculture and aluminium, and the prospects for metal
production in this area are being evaluated. Major oil
discoveries have been made in Africa, where agriculture and
aluminium have also become more prominent. HYDRO and
TEMASEK of SINGAPORE are developing projects in Asia. Work
is done to establish alumina production in INDIA, and they
have established new shares in Asian markets for
fertilizers, aluminium, petrochemicals and industrial
gases. Similarly, in Central Europe we are developing
activities in aluminium, fertilisers, industrial chemicals
and petrochemicals.
Oil & Gas employs 2,400 people and is involved in exploring
for, producing, transporting, refining and marketing
petroleum and petroleum products. Concentrated primarily
on the Norwegian continental shelf and the Scandinavian
countries, this business is now also expanding outside this
region. The Oil and Gas business area embraces three
divisions: Exploration and Production NORWAY, Exploration
and Production International and Refining and Marketing.
In 1997, Oil and Gas has an operating income of 6,739
million NOK on operating revenues of 18,204 million NOK.
Total investments were 5,295 million NOK. Exploration
activity amounted to 1,114 million NOK.
HYDRO plans to double its annual oil and gas production
from 1995 to 2005, to 500,000 barrels of oil equivalents
per day, through a strong increase in international
activity as well as further development of its
technological expertise and position on the Norwegian
continental shelf. Several major discoveries were made
last year in ANGOLA and NORWAY and the recovery rate for
fields in production is increasing. These factors,
combined with the progress being made on projects under
development, indicate that our goal is within reach. The
HYDRO TEXACO joint venture in DENMARK and NORWAY is
achieving economies of scale in retail gasoline marketing.
HYDRO was one of the pioneers when the Norwegian oil saga
began more than 30 years ago. Since that time, we have
established an impressive technological base, developed in
part through the exchange of knowledge between our oil
operations and other industrial activities.

Contribution to project

Responsible for gathering/evaluating experience from engineering, etc. of AZIPOD installations on coastal tankers icebreakers and cruise vessels. Will perform a market analysis for its installations on marine/offshore vessels.

Expertise

Established in October 1997 to carry out the business
activities of the AZIPOD system, the company is
responsible for the sales, design, development, production
and testing of electric azimuthing podded AZIPOD propulsion
units.
The AZIPOD propulsion unit azimuths through 360 degrees and
incorporates an electric AC motor located inside the
propeller pod. The drive provides many technical and
economic benefits for a wide range of ships. The AZIPOD
system was developed jointly by KVAERNER MASA-YARDS and ABB
INDUSTRY OY. KVAERNER MASA-YARDS applied the AZIPOD in
several ship products during the 1990s.
A major breakthrough for the AZIPOD propulsion unit was the
decision by CARNIVAL CRUISE LINES INC. to select azipod
propulsion for two 70,400 GT Fantasy class cruise liners.
The cruise liners, due for delivery in 1998, will each be
fitted with two MW AZIPOD units which will result in useful
space and weight savings onboard and will improve the
ship's fuel efficiency.
The AZIPOD propulsion system offers several advantages:
* the need for long shaftlines, rudders, sterm thrusters,
CP-propellers and reduction gears are eliminated - space
and weight saving installation
* reduced engine room size due to flexible machinery
arrangement - new possibilities in ship concept design
* increased cargo capacity - added revenue
* high propulsion efficiency - fewer fuel costs
* excellent manoeuvring characteristics and dynamic
performance
* low noise and vibrations
* available in units up to 20-25 MW.
Formerly KVAERNER MASA-AZIPOD.
