The manufacturing industry in Norway as well as Europe is facing increased pressure to reduce manufacturing costs. Automation along with advanced manufacturing systems and lean manufacturing concepts has to some extent preserved Europe as a key area for manufacturing.

However, more and more production is moved, or outsourced, to low-cost countries such as China where labour costs are considerably lower than in Western Europe. In the vision for manufacturing in Europe in 2020 (Manufuture ), it is stated that manufacturing cost cutting measures are not enough.

European based manufacturers must also intensify the development of innovative, high value added products. In this connection, “High value added products” are those involving advanced product and process development technology.

These products must provide improved quality, functionality, performance and environmental friendliness (in a total product life-cycle perspective) all in such a way that customers are willing to pay for the added features offered.

This calls for research on how to develop the right new products, the right way in a competitive and global market place. A key in this connection is to establish Lean Product development (LPD) tools and methods - applicable to people with different functions and at different levels in the organization.
