NVE has commissioned to the Department of Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering of NTNU a practical handbook on hydraulic design of intakes for small hydropower plants, i.e. the entire structure for diverting flow from the river and into the penstock.The book describes the different intake components and their function, and important design considerations. It discusses typical problems at small hydro intakes; floating debris, sediment, ice, sand and air entrainment. In addition the handbook has a chapter on hydraulic calculations, describing the procedure for hydraulic design of different intake types and gives the equations and other background data that are necessary for the design. Finally it gives a summary of operational experiences from five small hydro plants.
