Painting

The most important part of the studies is the students´ own work and discussions based on it. The work in the studio and the meetings with teachers, guest teachers and other students will all together give the information and experience that will make the students capable of building up their own language, not only based on painting, but also on other visual media and that can refer out of painting and of art in general.

An important meeting point is the weekly "painting breakfasts" were we discuss practical and theoretical problems. These meetings differ from seminars with or without guests, studio visits and practical meetings.

Painting represents a way to see with a history going back to the time before the renaissance. To develop it further, one has to consider what painting can be and to redifene it to make it actual once again. In this context it is natural to define painting as everything that has reference to painting, which includes most of what we usually see as "pictures".

Through the guest teacher program the students gets in touch with norwegian and international contemporary artists, theorists and curators.

The painting department has good studios, and a well equipped workshop for making frames, stretching and preparing canvas etc.
