Natural Organic Matter
in the Nordic Countries -NOMiNiC
This
project is a cooperation between several Institutes in the Nordic countries
(i.e. METLA,
SLU,
MH,
HiA, NISK,
NLH).
The project is financed
by NORTEST,
and has two main
goals: In this part of the project we conduct an intercalibration
between 25 laboratories which all determine the amount of Dissolved Organic
Carbon (DOC) of NaturalOrganic Matter (NOM) using high temperature catalytic
combustion of the DOC to CO2.The DOC analysis is thereby determined as
non-purgeable organic carbon (NPOC). The work will result in a Nordtest method:
DOC determination of NOM using high temperature catalytic combustion and
IR detection of CO2
In this part of the project we compare the relative amounts of
NOM fractions and their neutralisation and complex formation titration curves
in throughfall, soil and surface water from sites that differ in S-loading and
climate. The strategy is to reveal co-variations in the determined
operationally defined conditional constants (i.e. pKa and pKex values) by
comparison of the main NOM fractions (total, HPO and HPI acids) and the amount
of LMW NOM - relative to climate and anthropogenic loading gradients, inorganic
water chemistry, as well as soil or catchment
characteristics.
Acidification in
small catchments in southwestern China
In this project we study the
processes of acidification in the soil. Soil processes are a major issue
dealing with acidification, and the soil properties are of major importance for
the possible effects of the acid deposition. The approaches we use
are:
Catchment monitoring
Laboratory experiment with soils
Modeling of soil chemistry with computer
simulation models
Mobilization of heavy metals in soils exposed to acid
deposition in Katowice, Poland
This project is a
cooperation with NILU (Norwegian Institute for Air
Research) and Polish research institutions. We are interested in how clean up
of dust alone from the emmision sources in
Katowice may lead to enhanced acidifying conditions as the emmision of gasous
acid oxides remain. In this project we study the expected mobilization of
stores of Hg, Cd, Pb and Zn from the surface soil
layer.
Better models for
hydrogeochemistry simulation
This project is a cooperation with department of
geology and department of geophysics at University of Oslo. Hydrology,
geochemical and chemical processes are combined in a catchment scale model.
IMPACTS Integrated
Monitoring Program on Acidification of Chinese Terrestrial Systems- A
Sino-Norwegian Collaboration project
This project is a cooperation
project between several research instituions in Norway (our group,
NIVA, NILU,
NISK, NIJOS, NLH and NUPI) and several institutes in China (among
others: State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA), China Research
Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES) and Research Center for
Eco-Environmental Sciences (RCEES)) The main goals are briefly summarised in
the following points:
Implement a programme for collection and
registration of data concerning deposition and ecological effects of acid
rain in 4 provinces in China
Provide information as basis for the Chinese
authorities to prepare and implement cost-effective projects to reduce acid
rain in China
Provide valuable information needed to
establish a national monitoring network
Strengthen the basis for Chinese participation
in international cooperation on acid rain
