Convolution, multiplication and finite rank operators.
Abstract: If G is a locally compact group, it is well known that the product of a multiplication operator and a convolution operator on L^2(G) is a compact operator. We shall first look at when such a product is of finite rank and then study when two such operators commute. Then we shall look at applications to the multiplier Hopf algebras studied by A. Van Daele and see that all these questions have the same answer.
Ph.D. student Sindre Duedahl, University of Oslo, resumes his working seminar on Palle E. T. Jorgensen's paper, Measures in wavelet decompositions.

Abstract: The Connes-Marcolli paper generalises remarkable results by Bost and Connes. We present an overview over the work by various authors on the Bost-Connes algebra, and explain the challenges which appear when trying to generalise the Bost-Connes results.

Abstract: The basic structure underlying wavelets is a discrete, n-adic version of the ax + b group. The standard approach, based on quadrature mirror filters (representations of O_n) and multiresolutions corresponds to the selection of just one path in a certain combinatorial pyramid. Other choices are dictated by wavelet measures, and go under the name wavelet packets. We study the fractal scales of wavelet measures.

Abstract: We discuss the use of multiplicative unitaries in quantum group theory. In particular, we show how they can be very helpful in the construction of examples. We introduce a new technique to construct the Haar weights and we apply this technique in the concrete case of the quantum E(2) group.
Marcelo Laca, University of Victoria, Canada:
Abstract: I will talk about some simple C*-algebras arising as boundary quotients of the Toeplitz C*- algebras of generalized Artin braid groups of rectangular type. This is joint work with J. Crisp (Dijon).
