METABOLISM

The human body contains approximately 1000g (female) and 1200g (male) calcium, of which 99% is found in bones and teeth.

The remaining calcium is present in an easily exchangeable pool consisting of:

  • Blood
  • Extracellular fluid
  • Intracellular compartments

Free ionized calcium plays vital roles and is therefore tightly regulated at the expense of calcium in bone. Calcium is lost from the body through; faeces, urine, skin, foetal growth and lactation.

These losses must be compensated through calcium absorption from the diet.
