Bachelor's Degree Programme in Fishery Science (The Fisheries Candidate Programme)
Interdisciplinarity from the very first moment! We welcome you as an applicant in our attractive and forward-thinking Bachelor's Degree Programme in Fishery Science, formerly known as the Fisheries Candidate Programme at the Norwegian College of Fishery Science (NFH).
In the last years, various academic communities, politicians, and the trade and industry have emphasised that aquaculture and the fisheries will form the growth industry of the future; seafood is hot! The study programme therefore aims to provide students with the most comprehensive and interdisciplinary understanding of the fisheries and sea farming industry, of its possibilities and challenges. This provides a broad theoretical platform for mastering the challenges of tomorrow.
Qualification awardedStudents who take both the Bachelor's Degree Programme and the Master's Degree Programme in Fishery Science at the Norwegian College of Fishery Science are granted the right to call themselves Fisheries Candidates – a familiar title in the Norwegian and international fisheries and sea farming industries. Students who take only the Bachelor's Degree Programme will achieve the academic title: Bachelor of Marine Sciences.
Professional ProspectsThe Bachelor's Degree Programme in Fishery Science will provide students with thorough understanding of the fisheries and sea farming industries on basis of the interdisciplinary profile of the programme. The fields of activity have a wide range within the Norwegian and international fisheries and sea farming industries.
Since the start of the Bachelor's Degree Programme in Fishery Science, close to 550 candidates with the right to call themselves Fisheries Candidates have successfully completed their exams at the Norwegian College of Fishery Science. These candidates are today spread far and wide across the world, from Japan in the south-east to Greenland in the north-west, in exciting and important jobs in production, sales, marketing, product development and research related to fisheries and sea farming. The possibility for obtaining a relevant job with excellent development opportunities increases by adding the two-year Master's Degree Programme in Fishery Science to the Bachelor's Degree.
Study Conditions on CampusMost of the instruction is done by committed and competent lecturers in modern premises at the Norwegian College of Fishery Science. Self-tuition may be carried out in the reading rooms or in the computer lab. The teaching takes place in the auditoriums, the classrooms, the laboratories and the computer lab. In some of the Biology courses, going on a research cruise with one of our research vessels is a compulsory component. The programme requires students to participate actively through seminars, student colloquiums, and laboratory classes.
Admission RequirementsThe Bachelor's Degree Programme in Fishery Science has no further admission requirements beyond the Higher Education Entrance Qualifications. It is recommended that applicants have specialisation in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics or Biology equivalent to upper secondary school courses 2 MX, 2 KJ and 2 BI or 2 FY. Study Programme DescriptionThe composition of the three-year Bachelor's Degree Programme in Fishery Science is different from other university study programmes. The most important difference lies in the interdisciplinary nature of the programme. The study programme contains elements from Biology, Social Science, Economics, and Technology subjects.
All courses in the Bachelor's Degree Programme are compulsory – the specialisation and elective courses may be chosen at Master's Degree level. The courses have been arranged and composed with academic progress in mind. In some semesters, the courses may overlap in terms of academic content and teaching. Because of the peculiar course composition of the programme, the opportunity for student exchange and studying abroad will not be available until the Master's Degree Programme.
