After the examination

Examination results

Your examination results will be announced in StudentWeb, normally three weeks after each examination. For exchange students, original transcripts will be sent out both to students and to the home institutions. All students may order an academic transcript either in Student Web or in the Information Center.

If you believe that NHH has made a mistake regarding your examination registration, examination procedure or when determining your grade, you may write a formal complaint. When it comes to the examination result, you may complain about your grade as well as formal mistakes with regard to the laws and regulations that regulate the exam. The oral exam results cannot be appealed.

Grading scale

A consequence of the Quality Reform in the Norwegian higher education is a national system of letter grades from A to F. Grading with plus (+) and minus (-) is not permitted. The grades Pass-Fail may also be used.

The grading scale is explained briefly in the following table:

The following qualitative descriptions apply to the grade system:
A Excellent An excellent performance, clearly outstanding. The candidate demonstrates excellent judgement and a high degree of independent thinking.
B Very good A very good performance. The candidate demonstrates sound judgement and a very good degree of independent thinking.
C Good A good performance in most areas. The candidate demonstrates a reasonable degree of judgement and independent thinking in the most important areas.
D Satisfactory
A satisfactory performance, but with significant shortcomings. The candidate demonstrates a limited degree of judgement and independent thinking.
E
Sufficient

A performance that meets the minimum criteria, but no more. The candidate demonstrates a very limited degree of judgement and independent thinking.
F Fail A performance that does not meet the minimum academic criteria. The candidate demonstrates an absence of both judgement and independent thinking.

Grade explanation

Students are entitled to an explanation of the grade awarded for their performance.  A request for such explanation must be filed no later than one week after the student has been informed of his/her grade, and no later than three weeks after the publication of the grades. Under normal circumstances, the explanation is to be provided no later than two weeks after the student's request.  The internal member of the examination committee may decide whether the explanation is to be provided in writing, by phone or in person. If a set of written guidelines were used in setting the grade, these are to be available to the student as well, normally through It's learning.

All requests for explanations of a grade are to be sent by this web form.

The web form is to secure that the examiner gets all the information that is necessary to give an explanation. The web form will also give the NHH an overview over the number of requests for explanations, and to get information of individual requests when needed.

When you press the button 'Send request' on the web form, an e-mail will be sent to the internal examiner with the information filled out in the web form. After that it is up to the examiner to respond by e-mail or by phone. The response will usually come within two weeks. If you have not received an answer within approx. two weeks, you can get in touch with the Examination Office at: eksamenskontor@nhh.no.

All the fields in the form are mandatory except for the last one. We do however recommend that you give an account for the reasons of the request, so that the internal examiner has the possibility to particularly focus on that.

When you send a request, you will receive a delivery receipt by e-mail, which is identical to the e-mail that the internal examiner receives. Please save the receipt!

The courses will be published in the web form continuously. A request for an explanation of the grade given for a written examination must be submitted at the latest three weeks following the grade being published. After the deadline it is not possible to request an explanation of the grade given and the course will automatically be removed from the web form. If you don’t find a course in the list, it is probably due to that the deadline has expired.

Appeal against the result

Appeal against the examination result must be filed no later than three weeks after the publication of examination grades. If a student has requested an explanation of his/her grade, or filed a complaint with respect to either the examination questions, the exam situation itself, or the evaluation by the committee, the three-week period is effective from the date the student receives the explanation or decision on the complaint.

Grades given on oral examinations can not be re-evaluated, and are not subject to the above.

Your appeal against the result must be submitted in writing and address specific issues. You are required to clarify the reasons for your application, and in the event that an explanation has been provided, specify the exact points in that explanation with which you do not agree. The application/complaint shall be submitted to the Examination Office or handed in at the Information Center.

If you decide to make a formal complaint on the evaluation of your examination, a new committee will evaluate your examination papers. The new committee is independent of the original evaluating committee. Remember to take into consideration the following before you file the complaint:

  • The new evaluation committee may change the exam grade in the student's favour or disfavour.
  • The grade determined by the new examination committee is final, and may not be appealed.
