A
separate administrative unit was established at NHH in January 1994 to assume
responsibility for the School's international activity. The newly established
entity was named the International Office. The primary responsibilities of this
Office are the administration and daily running of the School's institutional
cooperation with foreign educational institutions. The most visible sign of
this cooperation is the student exchange programmes, which have gradually assumed
considerable proportions here at NHH. In the 1997/98 academic year the School
all in all had 160 outgoing students and 130 incoming students participating
in exchange programmes. For our outgoing students this constitutes approximately
40% of the total number of students enrolled in any one year of our four-year
degree programme. These figures are way above the student exchange targets set
at both national and European levels. The EU goal, for example, is that 10%
of all students in higher education shall participate in an exchange programme.
The majority of NHH's exchange programmes are organised into networks of cooperating institutions, where CEMS (the Community of European Management Schools) is the most important. Our International Office will play a vital role in coordinating the School's CEMS responsibilities. The School is also an active participant in educational programmes under NORDPLUS and ERASMUS and is Norway's representative in the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). NHH is also a member of the global network Programme in International Management (PIM). In total, we now have established forms of cooperation with 70 institutions abroad, which include highly recognised universities and business schools. The function of the International Office is to serve as a link between the students and the staff at NHH and our foreign partners. In other words, the Office is to function as a service and information center for the School's international activities.
