Assignments

The Assignment for a home based exam will be posted in Its learning or you may pick up the assignment in a paper version at the Information Centre.

Candidate number

When you are to hand in your exam, please use a candidate number to identify yourself. You will find the candidate number in . The exam is to be handed in at the Information Centre in three copies.

References and sources

Please state all sources and references you have used in all kind of written work at NHH, also in home based exams. If you do not do this properly, it may be considered as cheating or an attempt to cheat. The Library has written a good guideline on how to write references and sources.

Cheating

At NHH we consider the following as cheating or an attempt to cheat:

  • the use of written work that has been produced by another person/another group in connection with a previous or the current examination
  • an answer paper which has been written by another person/another group for the student
  • an answer paper found on the internet (any text copied from the internet must be marked as a quote and included in the reference list)
  • any quotes from books, articles or other sources used without marking the text as a quote and including a reference in the reference list
  • breach of the rules regarding cooperation between students or between groups

The regulations for examinations at NHH and the supplementary regulation to the exam regulations give more information on consequences of cheating or trying to cheat.

School exam

The examination day

A few days prior to the examination,  lists indicating where students are to be seated during the examination will be posted at our web page. Examinations are held in various classrooms in the school's main building, in the Merino building and at Hatleberg.

Examinations normally begin at 9:00 a.m. The exams last for three or four hours (details about this in the course description). All students must be present at the examination location at least 15 minutes prior to exam start. Late attendance may lead to expulsion from the examination

The time allowed for the exam can  not be exceeded. Students wishing to leave the examination room in order to go to the toilet or to have some fresh air, must be accompanied by an examination attendant.  No student is allowed to leave the examination room prior to half an hour after the exam started. Any student who violates examination regulations or attempts to obtain or provide information, etc. will be expelled from the examination.

Candidate number

Upon arrival at the examination location students sign an attendance list. Don't forget  to bring your student identification card from NHH or another identification. Next to each student's name on the attendance list is a candidate number, which should be written on each page of the exam paper. Do not write your own name on the examination paper, just your candidate number. If you should be dissatisfied with your exam result and would like to make an complaint, you will need your candidate number.

The examination paper

Students will be provided with three-copy exam paper on which to write their answers.  The student keeps the third copy after the examination, while first and second copies are to be handed in separately. The name of the subject in which the student is being examined, the date and the candidate number should  be written on top of each page. All pages should be numbered and the total number of pages should  be written on the first page. The student is responsible for checking that this is done properly before handing in the exam paper. It is recommended to use a ball-point pen, preferably with blue or black ink.

Material permitted for use during the examination

Students may use a dictionary to/from English and Norwegian or the student's native language. Special economics, finance, business, etc. dictionaries are not permitted, nor electronicdictionaries. Each lecturer will announce in the course what material is allowed during the examination including use of calculator or not. Please note that no loose copies/sheets of paper can be used during the examination.

If calculators are allowed during the exam, the following regulations apply:

  • The memory of the calculator should be empty. The student is required to demonstrate that the memory of the calculator has been emptied. Otherwise the calculator will not be permitted during the examination.
  • At no point during the examination should the calculator contain pure text.
  • The calculator should not be able to communicate with other units at a distance of more than 10-20 cm.
  • The calculator should be of pocket format.
  • The calculator should not produce sounds.
  • Equipment containing spreadsheets or word processing is not considered to be a calculator and is thus not permitted during the examination. Likewise, calculators allowing use of RAM cards and similar are not permitted.
  • User manuals are not permitted.

Materials NOT permitted during the examination

When the examination starts, you should clear you desk for everything but pens, material permitted for use during examination, drinks and food. Your bag and jacket must be placed in the front/back of the room. Your cellular phone must be switched off and placed in your bag. Do not keep the phone in your pocket or jacket - it will be taken as an attempt of cheating.

The regulations for examinations at NHH and the supplementary regulation to the exam regulations give more information on consequences of cheating or trying to cheat.

Postponed examinations

If a student due to illness wants to file a request for a postponed examination, the consequences for the student's progression by  waiting until the next scheduled examination will be considered. The following regulations must be followed in requesting a deferral of examination:

  • If a student is taken ill and must withdraw from the examination, a doctor's certificate must be submitted to the Examination Office no later than the day after the incomplete examination.
  • If a student falls ill before the examination date, and is unable to attend the examination, a doctor's certificate must be submitted to the Examination Office no later than the day after the first examination the student failed to attend.

If a student fails to comply with these deadlines, a doctor's certificate will be accepted only if there is a compelling reason for the delay, and if the delay is no longer than this reason requires.

Exam in courses in the master programs will only be arranged in semesters with corresponding lectures. Hence, students who fail an exam may only retake the exam the next semester in which the course is taught. However, deferred examinations as a result of illness can still be arranged.
