Background:
Systematic observation, evaluation, and critical assessment of match performance – commonly referred to as match analysis - is perceived as one of the most valuable coaching tools in modern top football. Since the outcome of match performance analysis may mean winning or losing a match, then the reliability and validity of its procedures become crucial for it to meet its intents and purposes effectively. Yet, a scientific basis for match analysis has neither been established nor seriously pursued by scientists. Indeed, the inner logic of the game of football and the challenges facing typical field research design presents inherent theoretical and methodological research challenges. Thus, research project will be conducted in different parts to answer the following main purpose and specific research problems.
Main Purpose:
To test the reliability and validity of team match performance analysis to explain goal scoring in football.
Specific research problems:
- How reliable are team strategies and counter-strategies of attack used in football?
- How valid are team strategies of attack used to explain goal scoring in football?
- What is the relationship between team strategies of attack, counter-strategies of attack, and goal scoring in football?
- What characterizes the effective team strategies of attack in goal scoring in football?
- How valid are measures of team effectiveness in attack in football?
