Sport, Race and Gender: Black Athletes' Experiences in Norwegian Organized Sport
Involverte ansatte Prosjektstatus Beskrivelse
The study focuses on racism in sport from gender perspectives and will focus on the experiences of Norwegian athletes with African background.
Sport has been taken for granted as a social arena where racial and/or ethnic discrimination seldom occur. Racism in sport is rarely raised as a factor which can hinder integration efforts in Norway, despite of the fact that acts which are based on racist motives, are repeatedly reported to occur in sport.
The aim of this project is to find out the role of sport as a social arena in fighting or perpetuating racism and sexism. To do that I have formulated two research questions to guide me:
1. How do individual and institutional racism do manifest themselves in Norwegian organised sport?
2. What is the meaning of gender for black athletes’ experiences and interpretations of racism in Norwegian organised sport?
I am going to apply qualitative methods approach. I will conduct field work in two teams in Oslo, interviews and document analysis from different sport organisations.
