Anvendt populasjonsgenetikk og fiske(ri)biologi for identifisering, beskrivelse og avgrensing av kommersielt og økologisk viktige marine fiskestammer i Nordatlanteren og norske farvann. Verktøyet er genetiske markører (blodproteiner, isozymer og DNA markører) og merking/gjenfangsforsøk inkludert transplantasjonsforsøk. De reproduktive enhetene beskrives med hensyn til vekstrater, demografi, kjønnsmodning, rekruttering, stammestørrelse, og relative årsklassestyrker. Numeriske simuleringer av evolusjonære prosesser, inkludert genom-miljø interaksjoner (naturlig seleksjon) utnyttes for å kombinere genetiske, biologiske og fysiske variabler. Studiematerialet for torsk inkluderer en spesielt omfattende tidsserie (~35 år eller 9 suksessive generasjoner) i Trondheimsfjorden. For torsk, hyse, sei, hvitting, kolmule, øyepål, sypike og sild omfatter materialet en geografisk kolleksjon som dekker norskekysten fra Østfinnmark til Stadt samt resten av utbredelsesområdet i Nordatlanteren.
