Hydrogen

Hydrogen Technology and Fuel Cells at Department of Material Science

There is an extensive activity in this area within the Department of Material Science (Professors Reidar Tunold, Georg Hagen, Mari-Ann Einarsrud and Tor Grande) and at the Department of Chemical Engineering (Professors Anders Holmen and De Chen and Hilde Venvik and Rune Lødeng, SINTEF).

In addition there is some work on PEM fuel cells in the Department of Chemistry (Signe Kjelstrup) . The following areas are covered:

  • Production of hydrogen from natural gas and methanol by syngas technology including steam reforming and catalytic partial oxidation and microstructured reactors. The research activities range from large (industrial) to small (portable) scale hydrogen production.
  • Production of hydrogen by electrolysis of water.
  • PEM and SOFC fuel cells, including membrane technology, dynamics and systems engineering.
