Masterprogram engelsk

About the programme of study

A Master’s degree in English opens the world. The programme gives the opportunity to thoroughly study English literature, language or civilization. In addition, scholarly theory and methods are emphasized.

The objective of this study is to deepen the students' knowledge and insight through a gradually specialized study. Hence, the requirements for the use of primary and secondary sources and for a scholarly and critical attitude towards the phenomena being studied are high. At the same time, there is strong focus on practical linguistic skills. The academic level of a Master's course is higher than that of a specialization/major's course, and provides the opportunity for further specialization within specific topics within literature, language and/or civilization.

When taking a Master’s degree in English at NTNU, the students may choose to specialize particularly within one discipline (literature. language or civilization), or to obtain broader qualifications. The department offers interdisciplinary courses, and the students may also choose an interdisciplinary topic for their Master’s thesis. The research areas of the English unit of the department include at present First- and Second language acquisition, British immigration history and migrant workers.

The Master's programme awards 120 ECTS credits and the stipulated duration is four semesters (two years). The first year consists of courses (45 credits) in English language, literature and/or civilization. A separate course in Theory and Method, which is compulsory of all master students, will prepare the students for the work on their thesis. At least 30 credits of the courses must be taken from the advanced level (Master's level), and 15 credits may be taken from the intermediate level (Bachelor's level). The course Experts in Team (7.5 credits) is taken in the spring semester during the first year of study.

The second year is reserved for the work on the Master's thesis, which is an independent, scholarly piece of work within one of the disciplines, or it may cover an interdisciplinary topic. The thesis is written in English. The students will receive academic supervision during the writing process.

This programme is well suited for those who are particularly interested in the English language or literature, or in social conditions in English-speaking countries. The programme also provides excellent teaching qualifications, and the foundation for studying at doctoral level.
