Locating Failure in Integrated Circuits by Comparing Images Depending on Electronic Test Result In the domain of failure location of integrated circuits, it aims to develop a software interface working when the electronic test result is not constant. Images of the circuit in bias contrast must be obtained for at least two particular signatures of the test programme. The failure is then located by identifying the divergence internal zone of the circuit (unstable node). The trainee will have to work in Unix on two connected stations. |

‘Medisys’ Database ‘Medisys’ project consists in setting up a georeferenced database devoted to analyzing the evolution of the use and coverage of soils on the Mediterranean basin. This database is used notably within the framework of programmes studying climatic changes (notably International Geosphère-Biosphère Programme). It includes the data deriving from high and low resolution spatial instruments, maps of vegetation and soil nature, meteorological and climatic measures and socio-economic data. These data are displayed in various forms : images, vectors, punctual measures... They must be integrated into a SIG geographic reference system and accessible via an interface able to define some criteria, e.g. geographic, temporal, parameter type. This training period consists in specifying the data management system and developing a model based on samples of the different types of data. |

Analyzing and Modelling Scale Change The training period aims to validate a method which makes it possible to pass from a point measure (classic soil measure) to a representative measure of a climatic model grid element or of an estimation derived from satellite measure. The particular case studied will be relative to the heat flow. From an existing model and data collected within the framework of great experiments such as Hapex Sahel in Niger, Alpilles in France and Salsa in Mexico, the trainee will have to validate the method and compare to soil measures of a new type. These last are based on a light measure able to estimate the heat flow on large distances -a few kilometers- and consequently comparable to satellite estimations. |

Surface Temperature Observation on a Global Scale In the domain of global change, the training period aims to study the evolution of the globe surface temperature over the last 20 years on the climatic scale. From the available microwave satellite data (SMMR SSM/I), an inversion algorithm of radiometric data will be elaborated to obtain the surface temperature. It will be validated by means of less frequent but more accurate infrared data. Then the temporal evolution of the surface temperature will be analyzed in order to determine whether a detectable evolution of the average temperature can be observed in large geographic zones. It will also be necessary to check that a possible trend is representative. The stress will possibly be put on boreal zones. |

Analyzing Sea-bed Topography for Studying Ocean Fluxes Sea-bed topography is an important parameter for studying ocean fluxes, and its representation in simulation numerical models is one significant element of them. The usual database is derived from the compiling of all bathymetric soundings carried out from boats in the past. A new base has just been elaborated in the laboratory, based on altimetry measures provided by ERS and Topex/Poseidon satellite missions. The training period aims to carry out a comparative study between these two databases, focussing on all sea-bed levels and the analysis of water mass properties (temperature and salinity) in their neighbourhood. Good competence in FORTRAN is required. |

Measuring Temporal Variations of Water Level of Large Continental Lakes by ERS1/2 Spatial Altimetry The level of large continental lakes responds to climate regional variations and depends on rainfall pattern fluctuations, evaporation and river flow. The training period will consist in analyzing altimetry data provided by ERS1 and ERS2 for measuring temporal variations of water level, and studying the results, using hydrology data. |

Analyzing Ocean Accretion Dynamics from Altimetry and Marine Data Analyses of gravity anomalies suggest variations in ocean crust thickness with age with 1 to 2 million years’ periodicity. Based on the altimetry data provided by ERS-1 and Geosat satellite geodetic missions, maps of geoid and gravity anomalies have been elaborated whose interpretation provides constraints for the models of ocean accretion dynamics concerning several ridge elements. The training period will consist in analyzing the short wavelengths of the gravimetric signal in the direction of the opening of ocean plates (temporal variability), comparing them with sea-acquired data and with the results of ocean accretion numerical models. |

Multispectral Imagery of the Lunar Surface (Clementine Probe) : Study of the Moon’s Ancient Volcanism The training period will aim to study a region of the Moon’s ancient volcanism based on multispectral imagery data provided by Clementine lunar orbital probe, known as the red spot region. The beginning of lunar volcanism are still poorly documented. They are important to understand the thermal past of the moon and the evolution of the moon’s crust. The work will concern both the aspects of the multispectral image processing and analysis, and their interpretation. |
