AAR4335 - Building Physics and Materials
About
Examination arrangement
Course content
The subject gives an introduction to indoor and outdoor climate, heat transfer including introduction to energy use in buildings, moisture transfer, acoustics and lighting. Theory and simple calculation methods will be introduced and used to evaluate buildings and building constructions against the Norwegian Building Code and other requirements. The most common building materials will be introduced, and their properties discussed in regard to the usability in various building constructions. These materials are primarily wood, bricks, concrete, steel and glass. An introduction related to resource use and sustainability will be given.
Learning outcome
Knowledge:
The candidate will get knowledge of
- Basic building physical laws giving the foundation for correct building construction design.
- How to find and evaluate materials and components for use in buildings based on their building physical properties.
- The properties of common building materials.
Skills:
The candidate will be skilled on:
- Evaluating the outdoor climate and the effect on a building site.
- Evaluating the indoor thermal climate and user comfort.
- Carrying out basic heat transfer calculations in order to find the thermal resistance and transmittance (U-value).
- Performing simple building energy simulations.
- Performing basic moisture calculations in order to evaluate the moisture properties of building materials and assemblies.
