Communication Technology

– About the study programme

Please note that from autumn 2008 this programme is substituted by the international MSc in Telematics - Communication Networks and Networked Services, see http://www.item.ntnu.no/msc/ . Application deadline for students with Norwegian or Nordic educational background: 15 April.

Mobile phones and the Internet are but the beginning. In tomorrow’s world of information and communication you can communicate where ever, whenever, using whatever. Communication with data, sound, music, video and text is revolutionizing our daily lives. It is happening right now. As an advanced engineer in communication technology you can take part in it. Care to join us?

We play games with friends all over the world on the Internet. You can use your mobile phone to flirt with text messages, check your bank account and buy cinema tickets. Using your computer you can surf the Internet, download films and music and play strategy games with thousands of players. The world-wide web which makes this possible is the world’s largest technical device. It rapidly expands and improves at the same time as it is becoming an integrated part of an increasing number of functions which are critical to society.

Information and communication technology (ICT) is the very foundation of such a future, and it is created by technologists. You could be part of this revolution – if you have enough knowledge about communication, computers and software, and about the interaction with the society which is served by the network.

Comprehensive programme

You will get a comprehensive education within ICT. The programme includes the structure and operation of communication systems such as mobile phones, broadband and the Internet. The programme is concluded with a larger piece of work, your Master’s thesis, which is often written in cooperation with enterprises.

We emphasize projects and group work to make the learning process more interesting. This provides skills which are required for future work. We have laboratories at top international level with excellent communication and computer equipment that you may use. We also have numerous student work stations – you don’t have to queue up to find an available computer.

This programme is suited for people who wish to work in a field where the technological development changes the way people live. Communication Technology is equally suited for those who wish to study technical solutions as for those who wish to discover what the users of the technology need. Do you enjoy frequent and rapid changes? If yes, Communication Technology is what you are looking for.

NTNU – Largest in Norway. NTNU is the largest educational institution in Norway within ICT – measured both in volume and academic span. Our research activities are numerous, and our lecturers are among the leading international experts in their fields. The programme is constantly developing and improving to keep up with and influence the rapid development, and to meet society's demands for qualifications. Norway’s only Centre of Excellence within communication technology is based at NTNU. Crucial technical solutions for the GSM system were developed in Trondheim in the 1980s. Already in the 1970s, NTNU developed the world's first earth station for satellite communication to ships.

This programme is meant for Scandinavian-speaking students. For further information, please see the Norwegian website http://www.ntnu.no/studier/mikom .
