Palantir to Enter!
Palantir is a monitoring and error detection system used to get a grip on University of Oslo (UiO)'s computer infrastructure. Palantir monitor most common UNIX flavors (AIX, Tru64, FreeBSD, HP-UX, IRIX, Linux, Solaris, SunOS, ULTRIX) and Windows-NT.The computing facilities at UiO are distributed, there are some 100 sentralized servers that do common server tasks for UiO. In addition to these there are some 100 servers spread around campus taking care of more local needs. Together the servers serve some 8000 PC's, 3000 Macintosh's and 400 UNIX workstations. It may be vital that a server is up and running, or on the other hand, that some system administrator knows that the server is not operating as it should and have a clue of what is wrong.
Palantir at UiO monitors about 500 UNIX and Windows-NT servers and work stations and has done this since 1991, in different versions. Palantir collects quite a lot of data, processes it and generates error reports, automated mail, automated distribution of SMS (to mobile phone/pager) and visualization of resource usage through different graphs.
