Integrated optics: mMove

Research on integrated optics for microsensors was started in year 2000. Waveguides are made by ion-exchange in glass. Photolithography will not be done in-house, while ion-exchange, cutting, polishing and characterisation will be done here. A small optical lab has been establshed for characterising the waveguides, and it will be extended considerably in 2002 with more equipment. Design and simulation of the waveguides are also done.

The research is currently focusing on optical trapping of micro- and nanoparticles with light. This is a combination of optical tweezers and integrated optics. The aim is to make a complete microsystem for trapping, manipulation and detection of the particles. This involves the use of high power lasers, and a 3-5 Watt CW laser will be aquired in the middle of 2002.
