FYS-310 Laboratory Plasmas

This is an advanced level course in plasma physics with emphasis on laboratory plasmas and experimental techniques. A prerequisite is completition of the introductory plasma physics course FYS-210. The course consists of lectures and laboratory projects. The lectures are divided into three sections: The first gives an overview of vacuum technology, plasma production, classification of plasmas and plasma devices, fusion plasmas and industrial plasmas. The second presents some theory relevant for understanding plasmas in the Blaamann device, like theory for magnetic confinement, macroinstabilities and anomalous transport. The third focuses on plasma diagnostic techniques, in particular those applied in the Birkeland plasma laboratory. The laboratory projects gives an introduction to all experimental techniques currently in use at the Birkeland laboratory, including experiment control, diagnostics, data acquisition, and data analysis.
