Societal Sector [Samfunnssektor]
Top level category for creators of archives. The following options are defined: County, Municipality, Private, and National Government.

Time Period [Tidsrom]
A search for a time period will bring up all entities fully or partially covering the requested period. Period may be indicated for all entities (Creator of Archive, Archive, Series, Item, Folder, and Document).

Storage Location [Oppbevaringssted]
The location where the archival material is stored. Archival institutions such as the National Archives and the regional state archives are examples of storage locations.

Archive Creator Type [Arkivskapertype]
Archive creator type indicates the type of enterprise represented by the creator of the archive. The following archive creator types are in use: Company, Administrative Body, Institution, Endowment, Foundation, Organization, Individual, Committee, and Collection (Strictly speaking, this is not an archive creator type, as it designates a collection of documents or other records that have been gathered via other means than the ordinary archive creation process. For instance, a collection comes into being when a person collects material documenting an incident or a phenomenon).

Area of Administration [Forvaltningsområde]
A group or assortment of related public administrative tasks. “Area” in this context is not to be confused with geographic district.

Administrative Level [Forvaltningsnivå]
The administrative level locates the archive creator on the rank ladder of the hierarchic structure to which the entity belongs.
Examples of administrative levels of national government institutions: Governmental bodies at the municipal level = Police Commissioners, State Church Ministers, social welfare offices, etc. Central governmental bodies that are not ministries = The Directorate for Cultural Heritage.

Examples of private administrative levels: The Central Organization of the Conservative Party of Norway = Central, while the Oslo Local Group of the Conservative Party = Local, Municipal level.

For municipalities and counties, there is a separate subset of administrative levels.

Industry Category [Næringskategori]
When searching by industry category, you may select the level on which to run the search, e.g. A Agriculture and Forestry. For a narrower search, you may simply select Industry – Subcategory, e.g. 01, 02.1, 02.012. The archival industry categories are the same as those used by Statistics Norway. The Industry Categories in the Catalogue constitute 5 levels.

Organization Category [Organisasjonskategori]
When searching by organization category, you may select the level on which to run the search, e.g. 1 Agriculture, Forestry, and Hunting. For a narrower search, simply select Organization – Subcategory, e.g. 0.1, 1.2, and 1.3. The categories are based on the division used in Norske organisasjoner [Norwegian Organizations], Oslo 1993.

County/Municipality [Fylke/kommune]
This category is used to indicate the archive creator's area of operation. The numbers of counties and municipalities follow the system developed by Statistics Norway.

Country [Land]
This category follows the list and classification codes developed by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
