Collections

A rather small portion of the holdings of the National Archival Services of Norway is not archival material, but rather collections. This means that their contents do not come from a sole archives creator, which archives tend to do.

These collections have been gathered to fill certain tasks or needs, without consideration for the documents' origin. Many of these collections were founded in the 19th century. Some were created by employees of the National State Archives System, others by private individuals who subsequently donated them to the institution. The collections can be divided into various groups based on their contents:

  • Collections of manual transcripts
  • Collections of medieval documents, also called Diploma collections
  • Photography collections
  • Collections of maps and drawings
  • Local historical and topographical collections
  • Manuscript collections
  • Microfilm collections
  • Collections on the history of individuals
  • Realistically arranged collections

Today, few of these collections are expanding; this typically only holds true for collections of maps and microfilms. On the contrary, several of the collections were greatly reduced in this century, as documents have been returned to the archives to which they originally belonged.

Collections kept at the regional state archives usually only cover the assigned district for each archive, while the collections in the National Archives cover the entire count
