| Research fellow
(stipendiat SKO 1017) A position as PhD student / research fellow (stipendiat) will be available at the Department of Chemistry (http://www.kjemi.uio.no/), University of Oslo from January 2008. The fellowship period is 3 years and is financed by the Research Council of Norway. The position is part of the Oslo SISAK project, which investigates the chemical properties of the transactinides, i.e. elements at the borderline of the periodic table. The research is part of a large international collaboration set out to investigate the physical and chemical properties of the heavy elements (Z > 103). Project leader is Professor Jon Petter Omtvedt. The research is challenging and demands that the research group has expertise in many fields: Radiochemistry, aqueous-phase complexation chemistry, liquid-liquid extraction chemistry, liquid scintillation counting, gamma spectroscopy, computer systems for instrument control and data acquisition, nuclear physics, and more. The position provides an excellent opportunity to work in a truly cross-disciplinary research field at the very edge of current technology and knowledge – it is an exploration voyage into the unknown of elements which have never or barely been investigated. Our experiments are performed at large, international laboratories like the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) in the USA or the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI) in Germany. Development work is performed at the Oslo Cyclotron Laboratory (OCL). The PhD project will focus on enhancements of key parts of the SISAK system, which is our purpose built liquid-liquid extraction system. Applicants should have a MSc. or equivalent degree. Knowledge and/or training in radiochemistry and nuclear science are highly preferred. Candidates who have experience relevant to the field of research, i.e. transactinide research, will have an advantage. The fellowship provides research training leading to the successful completion of a Ph.D. degree. The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. For more information see: http://www.uio.no/admhb/reglhb/personal/tilsettingvitenskapelig/ansettelsesvilkar/guidelines-researchfellow.xml In accordance with the University of Oslo’s equal opportunities policy, we invite applications from all interested individuals regardless of gender or ethnicity.
