Handelmann's table for classifying degrees of incorporation of ethnic groups have become a well used reference for anyone who studies ethnicity. It has however a major disadvantage. It is timeless and is based upon the assumption that ethnic categories do not become more or less incorporated with time. On my fieldwork in Kosovo, this was an obvious problem. By using Handelmann's table, I knew that my table with all ethnic groups in Kosovo only applied to a given moment in time, and that it would be outdated and incorrect within a year. Therefore I started to play around with different tables and graphs and came up with the graph under. I will here briefly present how Handelmann’s table for classifying degrees of ethnic incorporation can be adjusted to also grasp the dynamics of ethnic categories and how they change in time.
