Opening ceremony of the International Information Centre for Circumpolar Reindeer Husbandry
As a follow-up to the recommendations in the Arctic Council report “Sustainable Reindeer Husbandry” (2002) and the report “Opportunities and Challenges in North” to the Norwegian parliament 2004-2005 the Norwegian Government has decided to establish an international information centre for reindeer herders in the Arctic, in close co-operation with WRH. This will be a resource centre for exchange of information between herders in different countries and for promoting co-operation between them. The centre will add a new dimension to the circumpolar co-operation. In conjunction with the opening of the International Information Centre a one-day professional seminary will also be arranged. The seminary will discuss the developments in the circumpolar reindeer pasture areas, which are now becoming the new energy production areas in the world. This development calls for active participation and development of new information and communication strategies for reindeer peoples. Seminar title: Arctic resource management and development in partnership with indigenous societies – need for new communication strategies? Circumpolar reindeer herding in an energy rich global region. We truly hope that you will have possibility to participate at the opening ceremony and at the seminar. Please send your reply to arrive by August 26th to WRH phone number: +47 920 84404 Fax: +47 78486486 e-mail: wrh.es@online.no, office@reindeerworld.org Box 96, 9520 Kautokeino, Norway Yours Sincerely, Johan Mathis Turi Secretary General
