Space and movement in the
Sri Lankan conflict
Øyvind Fuglerud
Working Paper Nr. 1999.2
Abstract
Fuglerud argues that in order to understand why some people stay and some
people move in situations of violence, we need to understand how people
conceptualise space and their own communities within it. Instead of taking
staying as the expected outcome of time-embedded processes, and moving the
phenomenon always to be explained, one point of entry into the study of
migration, voluntary or involuntary, is to identify determinants of the
different time-space strategies which people choose. This process of
identification should include not only physical security, or economic goals
and
constraints, but the socially constructed perceptions through which actors
understand the various elements in their lifeworld through which they
strive to
secure a livelihood.
