A traditional system of administration exists side by side with
a modern secular one in Cameroon. Although the traditional system
led by the sultan has no official status, the power imbedded in
him is determinant for the region. Finding the rules of the game
in administrative decision-making in Cameroon is the aim of this
doctoral project, which focuses on the political culture in a Muslim
based locality with secular administration and high ethnic diversity.
Ketil Fred Hansen was a research fellow at the Centre for Development and the
Environment (SUM) working on the above mentioned project. Hansen has since gone
to work with the Norwegian Church Aid and later for Idégruppen Nord-Sør.
