"The "noble savage" comes from a long tradition of Euro-American thought that identifies certain non- Western "primities" as innocent and free of corruption, in contrast to the West's destructive materialsm. The "noble savage" idea - prominent in the writings of European philosophers like Montaigne, Jean-Jaques Rousseau, Thomas Moore, and others - idealized the virtues of New World native cultures as a foil to criticisms of European social institutions. At the core of this primitivist ideal was the dream of "people dwelling in nature, according to nature, existing free of history's burden and the social complexity felt by Europeans in the modern period... The rhetorical power of this idea in contemporary Western culture is undeniable." (Conklin 1995, American Anthropologist 97 (4))
