Major research interests
Research areas includes all chronological periods from the early medieval
period to the present, with some emphasis on the region of Northern Norway.
The Department specialises thematically in the following core areas: 1)
Sami history/ indigenous people and ethnic minority history, 2) circumpolar
studies, 3) migration/emigration studies, and 4) registration and methodological
development of nominative historical sources. The Department of History
also carries out research in other areas, such as African history.
Department of
Philosophy
The study of philosophy embraces many research disciplines, of which
logic, metaphysics, epistemology and ethics are traditionally considered
the most central. Each of these disciplines attempts to give a true picture
of existence, and each discipline attempts to approach the basic questions
relating to the individual branches of science. The study of philosophy
can be studied at three levels: grunnfag, mellomfag and hovedfag,
and the two lower levels can be incorporated as elements in an academic
degree.
Basic undergraduate programme :
Grunnfag, ECTS Credits: 60
Content: The purpose of the grunnfag programme is to
provide an introduction to and a basic understanding of the most central
themes of philosophy. The programme is divided into two main areas: the
general and the specific. In the latter, students choose an area of specialisation.
At present they can choose from the following: the philosophy of social
science, ethics, liberal arts/ humaniora, the philosophy of language, metaphysics,
and epistemology/ philosophy of science. Lectures are given in all areas
of the general course within the space of one academic year. Over that
period of time, lectures will also be offered in most of the specialised
areas. Students are assigned a 'teaching-supervisor' early in their studies,
who can assist them in designing a curriculum suited to their individual
interests.
Examination: At the end of the first semester of study, each
student presents a home exam (paper) on an allotted topic. Final examination
includes a home exam on an allotted topic, a written exam of eight hours'
duration, and an oral exam. For those who did not present a paper the first
semester, there will be two written exams in addition to the home exam
and the oral exam.
Advanced undergraduate programme:
Mellomfag , ECTS Credits: 30
Content: The mellomfag programme continues the
general survey of the philosophical disciplines introduced at the grunnfag
level. In addition, the programme offers the opportunity for further specialisation.
The curriculum at this level corresponds to grunnfag, but with the
addition of a further, specified syllabus. This may be chosen from the
areas offered at the basic level, or designed entirely by the students
(in consultation with, and approved by, a teaching-supervisor) to suit
their individual interests.
Examination: The mellomfag examination is held at the
end of each semester. Students may choose between a home exam (paper),
or a written exam of eight hours' duration. Assessment also includes an
oral exam.
2-year Postgraduate programme:
Hovedfag, ECTS Credits: 120
Content: The hovedfag programme is divided into two main
areas: 1) the compilation of the thesis (which counts for 60% of the total
workload) and 2) a more general area of study (comprising approximately
40%). The curriculum consists of a general and a specific part, with the
latter supporting the development of the thesis. The candidate can compose
his or her own individual syllabus with reference to the following areas:
the history of philosophy, moral and political philosophy, and the philosophy
of science and logic. The topic for the thesis is determined in consultation
with a teaching-supervisor. The thesis should be an independent academic
product, demonstrating the student=s
ability to construct philosophical argumentation clearly and coherently.
The normal length is approximately 80 pages.
Examination: The hovedfag examination entails the following:
a home exam on an allotted topic, a thesis, a trial lecture on an allotted
topic, and an oral exam.

of this section.
Department
of Sociology
Basic undergraduate programme :
Grunnfag, ECTS Credits: 60
Content: The grunnfag programme comprises the following
main topics organised into three courses: 1) sociological analysis, 2)
methodology, and 3) Norwegian society. Each of these full-year courses
focuses on macro-theories and statistics in the spring semester, and micro-perspectives
and qualitative methods in the autumn. Lectures are given in subject-area
blocks suitable for more specialised study. The students select two areas
of specialisation from the available blocks, which at present are: developmental
studies, gender studies, environmental studies, theories of organization,
and the classic social theories of sociology.
Examination: At the end of the first semester each student presents
a paper on an allocated topic. A final examination is held at the end of
each semester and entails the following: a home exam of up to 15 pages,
a written methodology exam of eight hours=duration,
and an oral exam.
Advanced undergraduate programme:
Mellomfag , ECTS Credits: 30
Content: The third-semester mellomfag programme (intermediate
level) continues the blocks introduced in the grunnfag programme.
The main topics are sociological analysis and different fields of specialisation.
The students select an area of specialisation from the designated fields.
Currently the fields are: social planning, welfare sociology, theories
of modernity and gender, and culture and everyday life. Lectures are given
in sociological analysis, and in the different fields of specialisation.
Examination: Assessment includes a home exam (paper of approximately
15-20 pages) on an allotted or chosen subject, an 8-hour written exam linked
to the main topics in sociology/ sociological perspectives, and an oral
exam.
2-year Postgraduate programme:
Hovedfag, ECTS Credits: 120
Content: The hovedfag programme builds on the grunnfag
and mellomfag programmes and leads to the higher degree of Cand.
polit. Admission is based on a completed Cand. mag. degree. In the first
year the programme includes courses on general sociological theory and
analysis, and introduces a variety of methods for gathering and analysing
data. In the third and fourth semesters the students focus on the preparation
of the thesis, based on their own independent research project.
Examination: The hovedfag examination includes a home
exam in quantitative research methods, a project-sketch, a home exam (paper)
in methodology, a thesis, a trial lecture on a topic relevant to the thesis,
and an oral exam.

Courses Taught in English at the Faculty
Foreign students may use English in examinations in all disciplines
within the Faculty. This rule applies even where no courses in English
are offered.
Individual tutoring in English may be available in any department, upon
request to and agreement with the department concerned. A department may
also assist individual students in compiling a reading-list within their
area of interest. Some knowledge of Norwegian is nevertheless a major communicative
asset.
