Mobile Communications
Lecturer: Professor II Terje Røste
A short background of mobile communication is given together with an overview of some typical systems. Then the course covers the cellular radio concept such as frequency reuse and handoff. Then propagation issues like path loss and log-normal shadowing are treated, together with different models to predict large scale effects of radio propagation. Then small scale propagation effects such as fading and doppler spread are modelled, and how they impact the transmission of the digitally encoded radio signals and waveforms. The most common digital modulation schemes for mobile communications are presented together with some practical aspects like bandwidth efficiency and
important performance issues like bite error rate, behaviour in fading channels etc. Some elements of adaptive equalisation techniques forward error coding schemes are briefly presented. Some basic diversity schemes are also given, mainly with emphasis on space diversity. In order to utilise the radio frequency resources, different access schemes are need. The course gives an introduction to the different access
schemes like frequency division multiple access (FDMA), time division multiple access (TDMA) and code division multiple access (CDMA). Next a description of network aspects of mobile communication is presented together with a description of network components and their functions. Finally a description of the GSM system is given including physical layer and some elements of the MAC layer.
