Negotiating the Future
Thinking about the future implies imagining it in ways it might, should or should not come into being – and working towards it in ways we perceive best. But is the end of the present still negotiable? Or is it already occupied by political visions, economical interests and technological unfolding? What futures deserve our immediate interest? How should we attend to the near future hopes and hazards of biotechnology? How will the new medical technologies reshape our human lifecourse, including our ideas of life and death? Why is the future given less value than the present, as in recent attempts to discount the future of our environment?

The Seminar - a short summary
Negotiating the Future brought together a group of people whose interest in the topic reaches into many areas of current studies of time, technology, science, policy, science fiction and Foresight practises. Recurring topics were questions about stem cell research and politics, public negotiations of renewable energies and emerging technologies, the relationship between policy and expertise in future negotiations as well as how to distinguish the future from the present.
