Case-processing time

Estimated case-processing times are based on measurements of actual processing times for 80% of cases processed in the last three months.

Many cases will be processed faster than indicated, while some cases will have longer processing times. This may apply in cases where the application has insufficient information, when there is a need for document verification, DNA-analysis, or other investigation.

The case-processing time starts running when the application is delivered to the police or foreign service mission, and ends when a decision has been made in the case. (In cases regarding citizenship, the case-processing time runs until a decision has been made, or until citizenship is granted.)

What can you do?

What can you do to ensure that your application is processed as fast as possible? We urge you to do the following two things:
  • Apply well in advance of the planned date of your arrival in Norway.
  • Be careful when filling in the questionnaire and make sure you enclose the correct documentation.

The UDI has produced a number of fact sheets that describe the provisions and application procedures for different kinds of permits. The fact sheets also include a number of FAQs. Please read the fact sheets before you fill out your application.

If you are still in doubt on how to apply correctly, please contact the nearest Norwegian foreign service mission (when applying from abroad) or the local police (when applying from Norway).
