Asgeir Sorteberg
I am a researcher in atmospheric sciences (PhD in meteorology) working at the Bjeknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR). My main interests are Arctic and north European climate, mid latitude cyclones and climate variability. I am currently heading the BCCR activity on predictability of the climate system and future climate change.
The climate of the Arctic and Northern Europe
Arctic and sub arctic climate variability with special empahis on large scale feedbacks between high latitude variability and the rest of the earth.
Arctic and North Atlantic cyclones
Analysis of observed (reanalysis) and modelled stormtracks. Part of the work includes working with Kevin Hodges TRACK algorithm, which provides an objective identification of storm trajectories giving the location and intensity of the local extremes of individual low and high pressure systems.
Bergen Climate Model (BCM)
The fully coupled Bergen Climate Model (BCM) is has been developed over the last 6 years. All togheter we are around 20 people in 3 different institutes ( BCCR, NERSC, and the Nansen-Zhu center in China) involved in using and developing the model. In addition numerous people are working on the different components of the model
The Tibetan Plateau
The Tibetan Plateau is the source of some of the worlds largest rivers such as Yangtse, Irradwaddy, Salween, Mekong, Bramaputra and Ganges. Climate variability and change at the Tibetan Plateau directly affect the strengt and variability of the river discharge which may have large consequences for the millions of people that live in the vicinity of these rivers. The work is done in cooperation with the University of Tibet and Tibet Meteorological Bureau.
