Ph. D. project:

"Simulation of wind and temperature variations in
complex terrain and their influence on sound propagation "

Financed by the Norwegian Defence Construction Service
Supervisors: Prof. Sigbjørn Grønås and Dr. Lars Robert Hole , NILU

Brief description:

Because of reorganisation of civil aviation in Norway, the Norwegian Defence was forced to relocate one of its major training facilities. In the construction of this and other new shooting ranges, strict regulations concerning pollution were applied. The regulations also included noise pollution, which depend mostly on meteorological conditions. By the use of mesoscale meteorological models, it is possible to make local forecasts of the weather conditions and couple these to sound propagation models. By this approach, there is a possibility to prepare "noise forecasts".

As computer performance increases, the possibilities to run high-resolution atmospheric models are growing. Since most atmospheric models are developed for classical weather prediction with grid distances down to 10 - 40 km, the parameterisations of the physical processes used in these models are not necessarily suitable for grid lengths around 1 km. The aim for this project is to improve parameterisations in MM5 to make it more suitable for description of finer horizontal scales. Non-hydrostatic models on scales of O(1 km) should have an substantial potential for weather prediction on local scales. Detailed forecasts on an hourly bases, e.g. for cities or large sport events, should become feasible in the future. The trend in numerical weather predictions is certainly towards increasingly finer resolution, and results from the present project might therefore be used by other atmospheric modelling groups in their development of fine-scale atmospheric models.
