Collaboration
a la Salomon
One of the central aspects of this project has been that we as a collaborative group had to arrange our own work. Due to limited access to software and the relatively short project period we have not been using any specific groupware software. We've relied on email, special purpose software for mindmapping and web-page creation and we have also used telephone quite a bit because the group members parts of the time have been physically separated without possibility of internet/ computer access. The telephone has proved to be a very frustrating media for communicating ideas to say the least! The participants' schedules have been too varied to allow much synchronous work, although some work has been done in a complete group. Most of the time the preparatory work has been done separately by each member and then feedback might have caused the work to be rewritten in the group or rewritten a second time individually.
The group sessions were used to resolve disagreements and uncertainties about how to present the material. When it comes to the creation of the web-pages this has been done by all members, but the integration into a whole had to be done by a single person (there is simply no other way available for us). However the creation of the pages were done in a continous, incrementing fashion in which the person that integrated the different texts presented temporary hypertextversions that the other members could evaluate and make their comments on.
Our discussion of Salamon's concept of "collaboration" is based on the article;
"What Does the Design of Effective CSCL Require and How Do We Study Its Effects?" - Salomon (1995).
