Mål og innhald

In the third semester, the student will conduct fieldwork and collect data on a chosen research topic. The duration of the fieldwork is one full semester. After 2 to 3 months in the field, the student shall submit a progress report to his/her supervisor. In the report, he/she will present the preliminary findings and suggest theoretical approaches to deal with them. The purpose of the progress report is to help the student sharpen the research focus and identify the topics that remain to be investigated during the last part of the fieldwork. The supervisor shall send a written comment of the report within two weeks of its reception.

The course presumes independent work, advised by the supervisor, aiming to prepare the student for the subsequent writing up of the MPHIL thesis based on the student´s fieldwork.

Læringsutbyte/resultat

Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:

- acquire insight into other life-worlds through the application of anthropological field methods, of which participant observation is a central component.

- interact and communicate in a competent manner with people of different socio-cultural backgrounds.

- gather enough data material to write an ethnographically grounded analysis of the topics chosen for thorough investigation.

- allow new knowledge from fieldwork encounters to modify preconceived models and prompt new analytical questions.
