University
of BergenHelp for using the web pages
Navigation | Don't get lost | Link colours | Official information | Page colours | Technicalities NavigatonIn the UoB home page, you will find information for different user groups like media, business, students, and employees at the university located under the headline: "Information for". In addition, we also present the content by subject under the headline "Information about". To a varying degree, these links will also be available in the left margin of pages further down in the hierarchy. Each reader might therefore choose his own strategy to find the information. It is also possible to search for employees or students by name. If you use the small search boxes in the left margin, do it the following way: Click in the box for employee or student, and type the family name. Then you may either press the "Enter" key or click on the small arrow to the right of the box. If you click the arrow without typing in the box, you will be taken to a page where you can perform more detailed searches. If you click on "Search/Help" you can also search for web content
on selected computers at UoB. How to avoid getting lostOn the top of most pages, you will find a line with grey links. They will help you see where you are positioned in the hierarchy. You will be able to reach a higher level by clicking on it. After going to a new link, it could happen that you have crossed over
to another main area without noticing. You will then normally be able
to find more information related to the page you have reached by clicking
on the links on the top of the page. If you instead wish to return to
the context you came from, use the back-arrow on your web browser. Link coloursIf you have a new web browser (like version 4.0 or higher of Netscape or Internet Explorer), you will get background colour instead of underlining of the links. You will also find that links may have different colours. If you only can se underlines and not different colours in the following examples, you have a browser older than 4.0. Internet Explorer 3.0 shows the colours but not the background. It you only have 256 colours, you will also not see the background. We have used the following conventions:
Some links with smaller font sizes might be without background colour. Example:
Official informationThe pages that have official information for the University of Bergen
has the owl logo in the lower right hand corner of the page. Read more
in this
page. Page coloursThe official colours of the departments are used in the left margin,
the first headline and the internal links for each department. TechnicalThe pages are adapted to style sheets, but in a way which will make them fully readable also for those who have older web browsers that do not understand style sheets. We have to use tables for what we call navigational pages. For pure text pages without coloured margins, we will do all the formatting of the page in the style sheet. Doing this, gives the pages a clean HTML code which will be quick to download, and will be readable in text based browsers like LYNX. The style sheets are centrally stored, making it easy to change all the pages by editing the style sheets. |
