The Norwegian centre for quality assurance of laboratory services in primary care (NOKLUS) is attached to the Department of General Practice at Bergen University. NOKLUS distributes tests with unknown values to participating centres. The health centres analyse the tests and send their results to NOKLUS, who process the data statistically. Test material for approximately 40 different analyses was distributed in 2000. Sometimes case histories accompany the test material and doctors are aksed to answer questions concerning laboratory testing in spesific clinical circumstances. After each distribution the health centres receive a report that illustrates their results compared to: other centres, the correct answer, and guidelines. Advisory medical laboratory technicians also receive copies of the results so that they can give advice to health centres in their area (region). The suppliers of laboratory instruments can also buy reports concerning their own instruments. NOKLUS is also responsible for quality assurance of some test carried out by hospital laboratory departments and instruments used by diabetes for home monitoring of blood sugar. Scandinavian evaluation of laboratory equipment for primary health care (SKUP) is attached to NOKLUS. SKUP gathers information about laboratory instruments intended for use in primary care, as well as organising assessment of such instruments.
