Jason and Hege present themselves...
Hege Emma Rimmereide was always a perfect student ; she did everything she was
told to do. But now she and her partern, Jason Anders Bockman, are required to
figure out on their own a text plus pictures (if they want) as a part of class
project. And they are stuck! They have had some great conversations and
dialogues on historical, cultural and linguistic issues, especially with regard
to the idea and difficulty of identity: what does it mean? in what context is it
relevant? why is it interesting?
pictures: someone confused, a mixed group of
people (Cafe Opera at night), a classroom ?, ourselves? puzzled selves?
We are two students in a Teacher Training Program in Bergen, Norway. She is a
Norwegian English student , hoping to finish her Master's thesis soon and married
to a Ghanaian studying in Norway. He is an American, married to a Norwegian and
trying to make a living.

We are confused. How do we fit into Norwegian society? Do we want to fit in?
Does anyone want to fit in? Norwegian society has two attitudes towards
foreigners: "we are doing these refugees a favor. We are doing the Right Thing"
or "who want s these intruders anyway?" So with such a friendly attitude
towards them, why do foreigners hang on to Norway? Why don't they come, get an
education and go back home (or somewhere else)? "

For that matter, why do foreigners come to study in Norway at all? The
educational system on the University level is completely different from anywhere
else and difficult to "translate" into other standards; foreigners are required
to have a competence in Norwegian as well as English and at the end, they are
expected to go home having mastered a local dialect.
