Introduction to classic synthetic and analytic geometry, starting with Euclidean axioms and Euclidean plane eometry, and then going on to coordinate geometry, projective geometry synthesized in the study of conic sections.
The synthetic geometry is motivated by problems with results based on a small number of concepts and axioms. This provides a good training in argumentation and proofs. The analytic geometry is conceptually closer to linear algebra and further courses in geometry and emphasizes computations.
Students who are admitted to study programmes or individual courses at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for by registering a study plan in StudentWeb.
International applicants, if you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures for international applicants.
Only students admitted to the course may take part in instruction and tuition and sit for the examination.
In addition to fulfilling the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway, you must either have 2MX/2MY/3MZ and 3MX/3MY/3FY/3KJ/3BI/(2KJ+3BT)/(2BI+3BT) from Norwegian upper secondary school, or have completed equivalent studies in mathematics as well as physics, or chemistry, or biology at upper secondary school or university level at another educational institution.
MAT1100 - Calculus, MAT1110 - Calculus and linear algebra and MAT1120 - Linear algebra.
*The information about overlaps is not complete. Contact the Department for more information if necessary.
4 hours of lectures per week.
Teaching takes place throughout the semester.
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, contingent on available capacity.
Two compulsory assignments have to be handed in and approved. Written examination at the end of the semester. Letter grading (A-F).
No special exam resources are allowed.
The language of examination is generally Norwegian. You can apply to the administrators of the course to be given the exam text in English. It is generally possible to submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Course grades are awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail.
A student may appeal against an awarded grade and/or file a formal complaint about exam procedures.
This subject offers new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary examination or fail an ordinary examination. Deferred examinations for students who due to illness or other valid reason of absence were unable to sit for their final exams will be arranged at the same time. (These valid reasons has to be documented within given deadlines.)
For general information about new and deferred examination, see
http://www.matnat.uio.no/studier/studieinformasjon/eksamen/kontinuasjon.html
Students may apply for access to alternative exam resources or exam forms on the basis of chronic illness and/or special needs that create a marked disadvantage to other students in the exam situation. Mothers who are breastfeeding may apply for extra time to complete the exam.
