SEMUT was established by the University of Tromsø to pursue the recommendations of the report Our Common Future by the World Commission on Environment and Development. The centre is a small administrative unit maintaining contacts with all faculties at the university and with a main task to prepare for joint efforts on environment and development research with non-industrialised countries in the South.
