Changes in glacier massbalance is an important indicator of climate change. In Norway the massbalance is also of considerable economical interest, as runoff from glaciers are used in hydroelectrical production. In Norway, 98 % of electricity is generated from hydropower, and about 15 % of the used runoff comes from glaciated basins.
Photogrammetry is a useful tool in these remote areas. We are currently developing a new terrain model for Svatisen glacier in Northen Norway from digitized aerial photographs from 2002. A strain net is in these days measured at Engabreen, as well as terrestrial photogrammetry for velocity measurements from crevasse tracking.
Project period: 2007 – 2008.
The project is conducted in cooperation with:
Miriam Jackson, The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate.
